Birds 26

Cage and aviary birds can carry mites, lice and intestinal worms. The products here are registered for pet and ornamental birds. Many mite and lice products are applied to the cage or aviary as well as the bird.

Red mites and other bird mites hide in the cage by day and feed at night, so treating the bird alone rarely clears them. Clean and treat perches, nest boxes and the cage or aviary as the label directs.

Lice live on the bird all the time and are easier to treat. Worms are usually treated through the drinking water or with a syrup or tablet, dosed for the bird's size.

These products are registered for pet and ornamental birds such as budgerigars, canaries and parrots. Poultry and racing pigeons are not covered on this site. If a bird is fluffed up, losing weight or not eating, see an avian vet.
