Most Australian dogs need cover for fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm, and on the east coast for paralysis ticks too. No single product covers every one of them, so check what each registration names before you buy.

A dog's treatment is sold by weight. Each weight band is its own registration, with its own dose, so weigh your dog and buy the band that fits.

Many products now combine several parasites in one chew or spot-on, but the combinations differ. Some cover fleas and ticks only. Others add heartworm and intestinal worms, and a few add tapeworm. Where one product leaves a gap, a second product fills it.

Paralysis ticks are a risk along the eastern coast of Australia, especially in spring and summer. Even with a tick product, search your dog's coat every day in tick areas. A dog that is wobbly, coughing, or changes its bark needs a vet straight away.

Puppies, pregnant or breeding dogs, and some breeds need particular care. The label says which ages and weights a product is registered for. Your vet can help when you are not sure.
